The NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North East and North Cumbria (NENC) has appointed 16 new Practice Fellows, who will develop research directly linked to local health and social care priorities.

Between them, the Fellows have a wide range of frontline health and social care experience, including nursing, radiography, speech and language therapy, mental health, pharmacy, physiotherapy and more.

They will work between the ARC NENC and regional health and care providers to deliver high quality applied health research linked to priorities in their own fields of work.

The Practice Fellows will join the ARC NENC on a part-time secondment basis, whilst continuing their roles within their areas of expertise.

This will enable them to provide a crucial link between frontline practice and applied research, and to co-produce and deliver real-world research and evaluation.

They’ll work towards delivering at least one applied research evaluation and research paper, as well as be responsible for encouraging the use of research findings across health and social care practice in the region. They will also meet regularly as a group for joint events and training.

Oonagh McGee, Chief Operating Officer for the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North East and North Cumbria, said:

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming our 16 new Practice Fellows to the ARC NENC. These Fellowships offer a fantastic opportunity for health and social care practitioners to develop research skills or a research project idea, whilst at the same time supporting a research culture within frontline health and social care settings. We were very impressed by the high calibre of applications we received for these posts, and we’ve been able to appoint 16 exceptional practitioners.”

The Practice Fellows have been appointed from the backgrounds of nursing, physiotherapy, radiography, clinical psychology, children’s services, pharmacy, social services, speech and language therapy, sonography and emergency care.

The Fellows will work with the ARC NENC for up to 24 months.
