NEW – Public Involvement Planner just launched by Newcastle University and NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)
A new PPIE (Patient & Public Involvement and Engagement) Planner tool has been developed by the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University, and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). It has been designed to help researchers of any stage to develop plans for patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE). Researchers complete planning questions based on the research cycle to create a plan for their PPIE. The plan can then support grant applications and act as a guide for researchers. It is open for anyone to use. |

Involving the public in literature reviews and qualitative research
Wednesday 18 May, 3pm – 5pm Hybrid event: Newcastle Helix and Online This workshop will discuss the practicalities of how to involve public advisors in healthcare research, sharing the experience from two research projects. The event will be useful for researchers at any stage and/or members of the public who are interested in public involvement and community engagement in health and social care research. |
Fuse event – Exploring and understanding access to community mental health and substance use services for people experiencing homelessness
Thursday 9 June, 9.30 am – 11.30 am The Core, Newcastle Helix This event brings together Experts by Experience (people with lived experience of homelessness, mental ill-health, and/or substance use), service providers, and academic colleagues to discuss research findings from a study exploring access to community-based mental health and substance use services for people experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will showcase the co-produced findings from interviews with 26 people experiencing homelessness and 19 people who provide support – and will include an opportunity to see the findings brought to life as colour illustrations. |
Research methods – advice session
Wednesday 4 May, 1pm – 2pm, then the first Wednesday of every month This event offers an informal forum where ARC members and applied researchers from across the region can come to discuss their research projects and methods. Research Fellows from our Enabling Methodologies theme will be on hand to offer advice and guidance on all aspects of research methods. The Fellows have a wide range of expertise, from qualitative research, statistics, evidence synthesis, data linkage, health economics and mixed-methods research. |
NIHR ARC Mental Health Implementation Network Launch Event – this is a national event led by ARC South London and open to anyone with an interest in mental health
27 April, 10am – 12.30pm Professor Sir Graham Thornicroft will be chairing this virtual event to introduce the national NIHR ARC Mental Health Implementation Network (MHIN) and its priority project areas. The event is open to all mental health stakeholders, including clinical and non-clinical academics and researchers, Experts by Experience including service users and members of the public, service providers, and representatives from the third sector. Integrating realist and economic evaluation methods to better understand and evaluate complex health and social care interventions – seminar series
Hosted by Northumbria University 27 April, 11 am – 12 pm Northumbria University’s Multidisciplinary Research Theme (MDRT) in Integrated Health and Social Care (IHSC) and Northumbria Realist Research Team Hub (NoRTH) present a seminar series at Northumbria University underpinning the following project: Integrating realist and economic evaluation methods (REEM) to better understand and evaluate the benefits and costs of complex health and social care interventions: why, what, and how? The first seminar takes place on 27 April. |

Fuse Research Programme Meeting – Planning for a healthier future: Priorities and Practicalities
