Local Government Association (LGA) event – Health Inequalities report: The Unequal Pandemic

Friday 11 February, 10 am – 11.45 am

In this webinar Professor Clare Bambra will share the findings of her recent co-authored book ‘‘The Unequal Pandemic: COVID-19 and Health Inequalities’. In her talk, she will outline how the pandemic is unequal in three ways: it has killed unequally, been experienced unequally and will impoverish unequally. Professor Bambra will be joined by a range of speakers from across the sector.

Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity (CoDE) Early Career Researcher Race Network – first meeting

Thursday 24, February 2-3pm

Aimed at early career researchers and PhD students working in the field of race and ethnicity, this new network will support scholars who are doing critical work on questions of race and ethnicity. It will provide a space for scholars to network and get support in navigating the career structure in academia and policy sectors, and provide support and guidance.

NIHR Methodology Incubator Qualitative Workstream Launch Event

Thursday 10 February, 11.00 am – 12.30 pm

This webinar is aimed at people with experience of, or interest in, qualitative methods at all career stages and levels of expertise. The webinar will also be relevant to those with an interest in mixed methods research and team science. You will hear career stories from qualitative methodologists and about methodological achievements. There will be an opportunity to share experiences and thoughts about challenges and opportunities for qualitative methodologists and mixed methodologists.

New study reveals those already at risk of harm from heavy drinking bought significantly more alcohol during Covid-19 lockdowns

New research by Newcastle University and the NIHR ARC NENC has found that adults already at risk of harm from heavy drinking bought significantly more alcohol during Covid-19 lockdowns – with households in the North buying more. The study could help to explain why 2020 saw the biggest jump in alcohol-related deaths in the UK in the last two decades.

MultiVerse Lab report reveals the most talked-about health issues in the region

A new report from the MultiVerse Lab public engagement project has revealed the top ten most talked-about health concerns in our region.

The MultiVerse Lab was launched in Autumn 2020, with the aim of gathering views from people in the North East and North Cumbria, around what matters most when it comes to their health. It managed to reach over 3,000 people across the North East and North Cumbria, capturing 500 voices. Top concerns included cancer, mental health and social care. Poverty and long-term illness were also regularly mentioned.

Evaluating a digital remote consultation approach for reducing opioid use

We are looking to appoint a Research Associate to work across the National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) and Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) North East North Cumbria, which will mainly focus upon projects related to COVID-19

 The role is based at Newcastle University, and the post-holder will also work with researchers at the Academic Health Science Network and Teesside University on a collaborative project recently funded by the NHS Insights Prioritisation Programme, which aims to evaluate a digital remote consultation approach for reducing high opioid use.

Exploring the impact of Covid-19 on the NHS workforce

This is a 12 month post funded jointly by the School of Medical Education, Newcastle University and NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North East North Cumbria to support a qualitative project related to the impact of COVID-19 on the NHS workforce.

Through interviews with newly qualified doctors, nurses and paramedics, the project will describe important aspects of the workforce experience during COVID-19. Outputs will provide valuable insights for the education, training and support needs of a medical workforce who entered practice during the pandemic.

Evaluating the ‘Little Orange Book’

A team of researchers from Fuse are looking to recruit a Senior Research Assistant to help evaluate the ‘Little Orange Book’, a guide to common childhood illnesses for parents/carers of children aged 5 and under. The project is funded by Newcastle Gateshead Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and the role is based at Northumbria University.

Research Assistant/Research Associate – Newcastle University

Children and young people’s awareness of Universal Credit and its impact on households

Working with the Universities of Newcastle, Northumbria and Cumbria, Children North East, the North East Child Poverty Commission, and partners at the Department for Work & Pensions as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

The project is a pilot study that will use multiple qualitative methods to explore children and young people’s (12-16 years) awareness of Universal Credit and its’ impact on families and households in the North East & North Cumbria. Study findings will help policymakers understand children and young people’s views and experiences of Universal Credit, to ensure the voices of children and young people are represented in policy making.

Fuse Public Partner Network

Did you know that Fuse now has its very own Fuse Public Partner Network?

This recently formed group is made up of members of the public who have an interest in getting involved in public health research. Life experiences, ages and backgrounds vary from person to person in our network, and one thing they all have in common is an enthusiasm for getting involved in public health research. So, if you would like any public input into your work (e.g. if you are planning a project; wanting a fresh set of eyes to review a piece of work; speaking at events etc.) then please contact [email protected] who will share the opportunity with the Network.

Encouraging sign-up to the Fuse Public Partner Network

Do you work with any public partners or public contributors in your role or through your research? If so, it would be great if you could encourage them to sign up to the Fuse Public Partner Network.

The NIHR School for Social Care Research – call for internship applications

Applicants can request funding of up to £5,000 for student internships to support individuals undertaking a Master’s degree to develop their career in adult social care research in England. Awards will be made to support individuals to undertake their dissertation at an NIHR SSCR Core Member university.

The deadline for applications has been extended to 12 noon Tuesday 1 February 2022.
