National Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week (2-8 May)
This week is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week – which aims to raise public and professional awareness of perinatal mental health problems, advocate for women affected by it and help families access the information, care and support they need to recover. As part of this year’s campaign, we’re highlighting two new ARC-led projects linked to maternal mental health, and a new training course aimed at supporting professionals who work with parents who’ve suffered baby loss. New post – Research Assistant/Associate/Senior Associate, Health Inequalities We’re looking for a talented and ambitious Research Assistant/Research Associate or Senior Research Associate to work within our ARC and across all ARCs to support our national leadership work in Health Inequalities. The post is based at Newcastle University. |
New post – Research Associate/Assistant, Public Health Applications are invited for a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate to work on a project funded via the North of England Commissioning Support (NECS) and based at Newcastle University. The role is linked to the ‘Prevention including Behavioural Risk Factors’ Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Consortium. The post holder will join the ARC national priority team evaluating the Enhanced Weight Management offer (the BWel project). |
NIHR Maximising Impact Review – invite to attend workshop NIHR is undertaking a strategic review, ‘Maximising NIHR Impact,’ to unpack how impact and knowledge mobilisation is supported and promoted by NIHR and other research funders. As part of this, they are inviting ARC members to join an interactive workshop on Friday 20 May (2pm – 3.30 pm) that will take you through the ‘Maximising Impact Review’ and share learning and insights from understanding of the current activity across NIHR. You will have the opportunity to discuss, explore and feed into the emerging recommendations of the review. The session is an excellent opportunity to learn more about and contribute to shaping the review’s recommendations. |
Call to apply for funding – to build community research consortia to address health disparities. This opportunity is led by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) in partnership with the National Centre for Creative Health (NCCH). It is part of the Mobilising Community Assets to Tackle Health Disparities programme. Projects should: § facilitate cross-partner collaboration with a view to establishing one (or more) community asset hubs, articulating hub structure and membership § scope whole or part of an integrated care system (or devolved equivalent) to understand the range of services, scale of provision, key stakeholders and existing partnerships § explore different collaborative models for integrating co-production into the improvement of health systems. The full economic cost of the project can be up to £250,000. AHRC will fund 80% of the full economic cost. Register an ‘intention to submit’ by 4pm on 1 June 2022. |

Involving the public in literature reviews and qualitative research Wednesday 18 May, 3pm – 5pm Hybrid event: Newcastle Helix and Online This workshop will discuss the practicalities of how to involve public advisors in healthcare research, sharing the experience from two research projects. The event will be useful for researchers at any stage and/or members of the public who are interested in public involvement and community engagement in health and social care research. |
Fuse Research Programme Meeting – Planning for a healthier future: Priorities and Practicalities Wednesday 18 May, 9.30am to 12.30pm The Stephenson Lecture Theatre, Teesside University Can we plan for a healthier future by intervening in the built environment? This half day session will present perspectives on this topic from academics, practitioners and policy makers and will ask attendees to consider how we can effectively use planning to deliver a healthier future, and what the priorities and practicalities should be going forward. |
North East and Yorkshire Health Literacy Community of Practice – Launch Event 9 June, 10 am – 4pm Newcastle University Health literacy is about people being able to get hold of, understand, and use information about health, yet low health literacy is a common problem in our region. This event is to share thoughts, plans and activities to build health literacy in communities in the North East and Yorkshire areas of England. Aimed at those from health and social care, voluntary sector, local libraries, universities, school education and community engagement who want to come together to raise awareness, take action and advocate for improving access to information and health literacy across our communities. Fuse event – Exploring and understanding access to community mental health and substance use services for people experiencing homelessness Thursday 9 June, 9.30 am – 11.30 am The Core, Newcastle Helix This event brings together Experts by Experience (people with lived experience of homelessness, mental ill-health, and/or substance use), service providers, and academic colleagues to discuss research findings from a study exploring access to community-based mental health and substance use services for people experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will showcase the co-produced findings from interviews with 26 people experiencing homelessness and 19 people who provide support – and will include an opportunity to see the findings brought to life as colour illustrations. |

Last chance to apply: PhD studentship – Cancer outcomes in people with pre-existing mental illness (Newcastle University) A new and exciting PhD studentship is available at Newcastle University linked to investigating and explaining poorer cancer outcomes in people with pre-existing mental illness. The PhD will involve the analysis of ‘big data’ so would suit someone with some knowledge, experience or interest in quantitative data analysis. |
