An important new report – The Child of the North – was released this week. Produced by the Northern Health Science Alliance (NHSA), N8 Research Partnership and supported by the northern ARCs.

 The report is easy to read, and covers:

  • Child poverty, inequality and deprivation
  • Pregnancy and early years
  • Child mental wellbeing
  • Physical activity, obesity and food insecurity
  • Schools and education
  • Children in care
  • Ethnic minority children and young people
  • The economic impacts of child health
  • Children’s rights-based approaches to the development of policy and governance

It also sets out a series of key recommendations for policy makers.

New report offers practical guidance on how to reduce health inequalities at a local and regional level

Levelling Up Health: A practical evidence-based framework provides practical guidance on how to reduce health inequalities at a local and regional level. It is aimed at anyone involved in improving public health.

It has been produced by researchers at the University of Cambridge/NIHR ARC East of England (Dr John Ford) and Newcastle University/NIHR ARC North East and North Cumbria (Professor Clare Bambra).

The WISE Covid Unsung Heroes Awards

The Women Into Science and Engineering (WISE) Campaign has launched the WISE Covid Unsung Heroes Awards 2022 (#CUHA22)

The awards recognise the significant contribution women have made across science, technology, and engineering to national efforts in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Opportunity: Research Fellow at Northumbria University (12 months)

Northumbria University are looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on a study funded by the NIHR ARC NENC which will focus on learning lessons from Covid-19 Community Hubs in Gateshead, and how this can shape the post pandemic welfare eco-system.

Survey: Experiences of working in adult social care during Covid

Researchers from ARC North Thames want to hear from anyone who worked in adult social care during COVID-19, as part of an ongoing study. A £50 Amazon voucher prize draw is offered as an incentive.

Introduction to Evaluation training 

ARC North Thames have developed an online ‘Introduction to Evaluation’ course. It covers key guidance from the planning stages through to sharing findings. 

The course is suitable for staff from NHS Trusts, Local Authorities, CCGs and social care organisations.

It will run from 7 February – 8 April 2022, and can be done flexibly over this period (on average it requires a total of 12 hours across nine weeks). The deadline to apply is 16th January 2022.

Grant development and writing workshop

The NIHR Research Design Service (RDS), Clinical Research Network (CRN) and Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for the North East and North Cumbria are jointly running a free Grant Development and Writing Workshop on 14th, 15th and 16th March 2022.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide information and to give busy professionals dedicated time to progress their research proposal. Inclusion of an early career researcher on teams is encouraged.

Successful applicants will be offered a free place at the three day workshop in Durham. Lunch and refreshments will be provided each day (travel to/from Durham not included).

Opportunity: Leeds Beckett University

The School of Health, Leeds Beckett University is currently in the process of recruiting to a new role of Embedded Researcher working with Wakefield Metropolitan District Council. The focus will be on carrying out applied research with local communities with a view to making an impact on health and wellbeing.
