This new, fully-funded PhD studentship offers a fantastic opportunity to join the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North East and North Cumbria, and is linked to our Supporting Children and Families theme.

It is a full time studentship hosted by Newcastle University, starting in September 2021 for three years.

About the PhD

Fathers’ experiences of psychological distress and access to support during a partner’s pregnancy and the first year after birth are poorly understood in the UK. This PhD seeks to improve understanding about fathers’ needs and experiences associated with their mental health during the perinatal period, and access to available formal support.

Findings will be used to support the development of an intervention to enhance future ‘father-inclusive’ services to improve access and outcomes for paternal perinatal mental health.

The project is led by Professor Judith Rankin, Professor of Maternal and Child Health at Newcastle University, and co-lead for our Supporting Children and Families theme.
