Together Through Crisis: An exploration of challenges and responses to the cost of living crisis affecting Eastern European families and children in the North East.

This project aims to explore:

  • How does the cost of living crisis impact on the wellbeing of Eastern European families?
  • How can peer –support and advice enable such families to overcome the challenges they are facing?

It is led by NIHR ARC NENC Research Fellow Dr Hayley Alderson, in collaboration with the International Community Organisation of Sunderland (ICOS).

The project

The research has focused on issues facing Eastern European families living Sunderland, and particularly investigated the extent to which the cost of living crisis impacts on their wellbeing.

It has also investigated the acceptability and helpfulness of ICOS’s interventions in supporting the families to deal with the crisis.

ICOS is run by people with lived experience of migration, and all staff, as well as the majority of the board were born abroad.

The project has involved Eastern European women and families, including children, in the design and delivery of the research.

This page will be updated as the project progresses.

Lead: Dr Hayley Alderson, Newcastle University, NIHR ARC NENC Research Fellow.
