Knowledge mobilisation support for researchers

Resources

Knowledge mobilisation (KM) is the active, two-way process of connecting academic research with real world users – such as policymakers, practitioners and the public – to create practical change.

It goes beyond sharing research and includes ongoing collaboration where researchers and evidence users shape questions and solutions together.

The ultimate goal is to use evidence-based insights to change policy, commissioning and services.

Essential KM tips for researchers

  • Build knowledge mobilisation into the research from the start. Consider who could benefit from the research, the changes you hope to influence, and how impact will be achieved and evidenced throughout the project.
  • Work in partnership with key stakeholders. Engage patients, practitioners, policymakers, service leaders and community partners throughout the research process to ensure the work is relevant, usable and responsive to real-world needs.

  • Think beyond dissemination. Sharing findings is important, but knowledge mobilisation also focuses on supporting the uptake, adaptation and application of evidence in practice, policy and decision-making.
  • Tailor your approach to different audiences. Use appropriate formats, language and channels to engage different groups, ensuring that research findings are accessible, meaningful and actionable for those who need them.
