Dr Alexandra Carne-Watson is based at Teesside University and Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust.
Her research focuses on improving the health and wellbeing of people living with multiple long-term conditions through applied, collaborative research that informs policy and practice.
Alex completed her NIHR ARC-funded PhD at Teesside University, where she investigated the relationship between persistent pain and depression in older adults using mixed methods research.
She has experience across a range of research methodologies, including clinical trials, evidence synthesis, qualitative and quantitative research, and patient and public involvement.
Her research interests include multimorbidity, mental health, persistent pain, healthy ageing, workforce innovation and the design and evaluation of interventions that improve health outcomes and reduce inequalities.
She is particularly interested in understanding how health services can be better organised and delivered to meet the needs of people with complex conditions, while supporting the health and wellbeing of the workforce delivering care.
Alongside her fellowship, Alex works as a Trial Manager on an NIHR-funded multi-centre randomised controlled trial and has experience leading and supporting research across NHS and university settings.
She is passionate about working collaboratively with patients, clinicians, researchers and policymakers to co-produce research that has meaningful impact on healthcare services, professional practice and population health.
Her long-term ambition is to develop a programme of research that improves outcomes for people with complex health needs while supporting a resilient, sustainable healthcare workforce.
