Care improvement and safety
Developing and sharing research evidence and practical tools to improve care quality, patient safety, and health outcomes.
About this research theme
Our work will focus on developing, testing and implementing ways of delivering better care across the health and care system.
We will work closely with health and social care partners in our region, and nationally, to understand what helps improvement happen in practice and how services can deliver safer, higher‑quality care for all communities.
This will include the design and evaluation of new models of care that help shift support from hospital to home.
We will use implementation science to understand how improvements can be put into practice and embedded in everyday work, and work with partners to develop transferable knowledge, practical tools, and systems that support improvement across a wide range of different settings.
Key areas of work
- Designing and evaluating new models of care: With a focus on approaches that reduce the need for hospital care and support people at home or in community settings.
- Supporting implementation: Exploring how to introduce and sustain improvements in health and care services, helping teams understand what works, for whom and in what context.
- Promoting value‑for‑money care models: Exploring approaches that make the best use of resources while maintaining or improving patient experience and outcomes.
- Developing practical tools and guidance: Developing toolkits, learning systems and other resources that staff and organisations can use to improve care quality and safety, and supporting their use in practice.
