Professor Matthew Campbell is our Health and Care Innovation Lead
He is Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor for Health Sciences and Wellbeing at the University of Sunderland, Professor of Human Metabolism and Integrative Physiology, and Head, Co-Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the Northern Ophthalmic Research and Innovation Institute (NORI).
He has secured more than £29.3 million in research and innovation funding from UKRI, medical research charities, industry and VCSE organisations. This includes leadership of a £10.64 million EPSRC Research and Partnership Hub, hosted through NORI, bringing together a major multidisciplinary partnership spanning universities, the NHS, industry, civic organisations and international collaborators. His work has generated more than 150 peer-reviewed outputs and received multiple international research awards.
He has held expert advisory and consultancy roles with organisations including the World Health Organisation, NHS England, UKRI and Diabetes UK. He co-chaired the REF2029 People, Culture and Environment Pilot Panel and now serves as a Strategy, People and Research Environment Expert for REF2029 Main Panel A – Medicine, Health and Life Sciences, contributing to the development and assessment of the national research excellence framework.
