Apply now for a funded Masters degree linked to applied health or social care – closing date 6 May

Start your research journey in applied health or social care, by applying for a funded Masters course in 2022. We’re offering to fund a number of places on selected Masters programmes linked to applied health and social care, delivered by our regional universities.

The opportunities are open to anyone interested in, or working in, applied health research in our region – with some specific opportunities for those working in mental health.

MQ Mental Health Research – Mental Health Fellows Award 2022 (closes 29 April 2022)

Please note the short timeframe

This award is open to any early career researcher, from any institution, whose work examines the premature death of people who have experienced mental illness and mental distress. The award provides up to £225,000 over 3 years.

New network launched for research in palliative care and end of life care

A new Network has been formed and is set to be launched, to support research into palliative care and end of life care in our region.

The ‘RIPEN’ Network is an NIHR-funded partnership to develop and encourage palliative care research across the North East and North Cumbria.

It will be launched with an online event on Wednesday 4 May, 2pm – 4pm, and anyone with an interest in this area of work is encouraged to attend.

The Network is linked to our Multimorbidity, Ageing and Frailty research theme.

Involving the public in literature reviews and qualitative research

Wednesday 18 May, 3pm – 5pm

Hybrid event: Newcastle Helix and Online

This workshop will discuss the practicalities of how to involve public advisors in healthcare research, sharing the experience from two research projects.

The event will be useful for researchers at any stage and/or members of the public who are interested in public involvement and community engagement in health and social care research.

Creative methods in research with children and young people – delivered by our Supporting Children and Families theme.

Tuesday 3 May, 4pm

This webinar will present an overview of creative and collaborative approaches to communicating and researching with children and young people in projects focused on producing materials for direct use in healthcare, and other projects concerned with exploring their perspectives on different aspects of their lives.

Fuse event – Exploring and understanding access to community mental health and substance use services for people experiencing homelessness

Thursday 9 June, 9.30 am – 11.30 am

The Core, Newcastle Helix

This event brings together Experts by Experience (people with lived experience of homelessness, mental ill-health, and/or substance use), service providers, and academic colleagues to discuss research findings from a study exploring access to community-based mental health and substance use services for people experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event will showcase the co-produced findings from interviews with 26 people experiencing homelessness and 19 people who provide support – and will include an opportunity to see the findings brought to life as colour illustrations.

Research methods – advice session

Wednesday 4 May, 1pm – 2pm, then the first Wednesday of every month

This event offers an informal forum where ARC members and applied researchers from across the region can come to discuss their research projects and methods.

Research Fellows from our Enabling Methodologies theme will be on hand to offer advice and guidance on all aspects of research methods.

The Fellows have a wide range of expertise, from qualitative research, statistics, evidence synthesis, data linkage, health economics and mixed-methods research.

Integrating realist and economic evaluation methods to better understand and evaluate complex health and social care interventions – seminar series

Hosted by Northumbria University

27 April, 11 am – 12 pm

Northumbria University’s Multidisciplinary Research Theme (MDRT) in Integrated Health and Social Care (IHSC) and Northumbria Realist Research Team Hub (NoRTH) present a seminar series at Northumbria University underpinning the following project:​ Integrating realist and economic evaluation methods (REEM) to better understand and evaluate the benefits and costs of complex health and social care interventions: why, what, and how? ​

The first seminar takes place on 27 April.

Fuse Research Programme Meeting – Planning for a healthier future: Priorities and Practicalities

Can we plan for a healthier future by intervening in the built environment?

This half day session will present perspectives on this topic from academics, practitioners and policy makers and will ask attendees to consider how we can effectively use planning to deliver a healthier future, and what the priorities and practicalities should be going forward.

The International Clinical Trials Day – Surgical Cancer Trials Event

Friday 20 May, 11 am – 2 pm

Hybrid event: Online and at Newcastle University

Delivered by the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Clinical Trials Design Team, NIHR Research Design Service North East and North Cumbria, Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit, and Biostatistics Research Group.

The event will consist of presentations, with time for questions, on the following subjects:  Things I wish…., lessons from three clinical trials, The Funder Perspective, Innovative Trial Designs in Surgical Trials and The SarcoSIGHT Trial.

Research Assistant – Northumbria University

To support a project exploring Criminal Exploitation and Serious Violence targeted at vulnerable people in Newcastle.  The project is being delivered in partnership with Newcastle City Council and Northumbria Police and with colleagues from several local universities.

Supporting researchers to apply for funding from the NIHR Public Health Research Programme – PHRADA

Public Health Research Applications and Design Advice (PHRADA) is provided by the NIHR RDS across England to support applicants to develop competitive applications to the NIHR Public Health Research (PHR) programme.

It is currently supporting applications for the following NIHR PHR commissioned calls:

·  21/605 Public health interventions led by or involving the police

·  22/21 Interventions to support the health of unpaid carers

·  22/22 Interventions to prevent eviction and homelessness

·  22/23 Interventions to prevent male violence against women and girls
