How to reference the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for the North East and North Cumbria (NENC) if we’ve funded your research.

As a NIHR Applied Research Collaboration, we fund a wide range of research projects, as well as research posts including PhDs and Research Fellowships.

If we’ve funded your project or we’ve funded (or part-funded) your post, it’s really important that you reference that funding in your research outputs or whenever you’re sharing information about your work.

This acknowledgement is vital to ensure transparency and help improve the visibility of NIHR research.

What counts?

If you’re producing any of the following, they should include an appropriate reference to the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North East and North Cumbria (NENC), and/or our logo.

  • Presentations about your project or work
  • Posters
  • Research papers
  • Research briefs/policy briefs
  • Blogs or other online content
  • Social media posts
  • Press releases
  • Films or animations
  • Podcasts

Published work

Research papers must be published as OPEN ACCESS and include a reference that indicates that the work was funded/part-funded/supported by us.

Please use our correct name in full, as well as our NIHR identifier number.

National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North East and North Cumbria (NIHR200173).

Common mistakes

We see the following errors frequently in funding references.

  • ‘Collaborative’ instead of Collaboration
  • NIHR missing
  • Called ‘North East North Cumbria Applied Research Collaboration’ (wrong order)
  • Identifier number missing.

Please check to ensure your reference is correct before submitting for publication.

Download the ‘Guide to referencing the NIHR ARC NENC’ below, which gives more detailed guidance on referencing.

Please let us know

When you have a paper accepted for publication, please let us know as soon as possible. Email [email protected] with details of: the title, journal, estimated publication date.

This is important because:

  • NIHR hold a central database of upcoming publications – and all centres are required to keep this updated.
  • It enables us to track publications for reporting back to NIHR.
  • It means we have time to work with you on a plan around how to share your work once it’s published.

Communicating your work

Your research is complete, your paper has been published – now it’s time to spread the word. You want to reach the right people, at the right time, and present your work in a way that is clear and has impact.

We’re here to help – and can support with evidence summaries, research briefs, news articles, blogs, and other activities.

Please email [email protected] for advice and support.

Media activity/press releases

If your host organisation is planning a press release or media activity relating to your ARC NENC-funded work, you must let us know before this work starts (or as soon as possible).

NIHR need to be made aware of any planned press releases and require at least three working days notice to check and give approval for a press release to be issued.

If this is the case, please contact our Communications Manager – [email protected] at the earliest opportunity, for support with this process.
