Society for Social Medicine and Population Health 67th Annual Scientific Meeting

Wednesday 6th September – Friday 8th September 2023

The NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North East and North Cumbria, alongside our partners at Fuse, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health, are proud hosts of this year’s Society for Social Medicine (SSM) and Population Health Annual Conference, and which will be held on campus at Newcastle University.

The SSM Annual Scientific Meeting will be a three-day academic and professional conference with a mix of high quality, peer-reviewed oral presentations, covering some of the most pressing issues in population health.

The event will include two prestigious lectures on days one and three.

The Pemberton Lecture on day one will be delivered by Professor Anthony Costello. Anthony Costello is Professor of International Child Health and Director of the UCL Institute for Global Health. He trained as a paediatrician and has expertise in maternal and child health epidemiology and programmes in developing countries.

The Cochrane Lecture on day three will be delivered by Dr Margaret McCartney, St Andrew’s University. Margaret McCartney is a GP in Glasgow, columnist for the BMJ, and broadcasts for Radio 4’s Inside Health. She has written three books, The Patient Paradox, Living with Dying, and The State of Medicine.

Over 300 delegates are registered to attend, spanning a wide range of disciplines, including public health, epidemiology, social sciences, economics, psychology, health services research, disease prevention, policy and political science.
