NIHR Open Access Guidance and applying for Open Access Funding

In July 2022, NIHR published a new Open Access policy, which applies to peer-reviewed articles submitted from 1 June 2022.

This policy stipulates that all NIHR-funded work must be published in an Open Access format. This policy applies to all NIHR ARC NENC funded work (and researchers).

Why does my work need to be published as Open Access?

Open Access makes published academic research freely, immediately and permanently available online for anyone to read, share and reuse. This maximises the societal, academic, and economic impact of publicly funded research, and enhances the integrity and rigour of research through greater openness and transparency.

Funding for Open Access publications

Where research has been funded by the ARC NENC (either directly as a project, or because your role is funded by us), we will apply to NIHR on your behalf, for Open Access Funding for your publication.

When preparing your work for submission for publication, please email us at [email protected] including details of the title of your work, where you plan to publish, and the fees.

Reducing publication fees

ARC NENC researchers should always check with their University library first to see if there are publishing agreements in place before applying for Open Access funds.

Often, there will be an agreement already in place with your university library which means you can get the fee waived or reduced significantly.

Please can we also remind you to continue to let us know when you are submitting ARC-funded research for publication, so we can share it on our ARC NENC website and support with any wider dissemination and communication activities, once published.

If you have any questions about this, please get in touch by email at [email protected]

Another opportunity – the NIHR Open Research platform

NIHR Open Research provides all NIHR-funded researchers with a place to publish any results they think are worth sharing. All articles benefit from rapid Open Access publication, transparent peer review and editorial guidance on making all source data openly available.
