Introduction to the ARC (Applied Research Collaboration) North East and North Cumbria (NENC)

What is Public Involvement & Community Engagement?

 Roles/activities

Public contributors are members of the public who get involved in research. Activities might include:

  • Identifying research topics and questions of importance to members of the public, patients and service users
  • Acting as applicants alongside researchers on funding grants
  • Offering advice and feedback as a member of a project’s steering group/research team
  • Reviewing documents
  • Helping to develop materials such as information sheets, interview guides or questionnaires
  • Carrying out interviews/taking part in focus groups with research participants
  • Analysing data
  • Writing up research findings
  • Helping to share research findings and get research evidence into practice.
  • Co-delivering training, seminars, workshops or attending conferences
  • Co-authoring papers, articles or reports
  • Writing blogs or content for ARC website & social media
  • Representation at a governance level across the ARC (Stakeholder Board, Executive Board, Implementation Advisory Group, EDI Group etc.)

Training, learning and development opportunities

  • E-Bulletin – Circulated weekly this bulletin contains news, opportunities to engage in new areas of research, events, training, tools and resources.
  • The ARC NENC has a Virtual College which provides information about training and learning opportunities: The Virtual College Training Hub

Support/Networks

  • Public Advisory Network – This group includes individual members of the public, service users, carers, experts by experience and voluntary/community sector groups. It meets quarterly, either online or as a hybrid online/face to face meeting. Meetings are chaired by a member of the Network.   • Young Public Advisory Network – A group of young people who meet regularly both online & in person to discuss opportunities to engage in health and social care research. For further information please contact: [email protected]Young Public Advisory Network Registration Form
  • PICE Special Interest Group – Meets online on the last Thursday of the month. Each session will focus on a different theme, area of interest related to public involvement & community engagement. For further information please contact: [email protected]
  • Mental Health Special Interest Group – a group of researchers, public contributors, practitioners, clinicians and VCSE organisations with an interest in mental health. For further information please contact: [email protected]
  • Deaf/British Sign Language (BSL) Experts by Experience Group – a group that includes D/deaf people, people who use BSL, practitioners and VCSE organisations. For further information please contact: [email protected] OR [email protected]
